Vermont Civil War Facts
- Vermont was the first state constitutionally to abolish slavery, when it was admitted to the Union in 1791.
- Vermont contributed more troops per capita and suffered the highest per capita casualty rate of any Union state during the Civil War.
- The northernmost land engagement in the Civil War occurred October 19, 1864, when Confederates launched a raid across the Canadian border and robbed a bank in St. Albans, Vermont.
- Sixty-four Vermonters received the Medal of Honor during the Civil War, including Willie Johnston, at age 12 the youngest American ever to be so honored.
- "Hildene," in Manchester, Vermont, built in 1905 by Robert Todd Lincoln, became home to the only direct descendants of Abraham Lincoln. Robert first visited Manchester in the summer of 1863.
